Big Bend National Park was officially established in 1944 to protect and preserve the natural and historic values of the Big Bend region. Considered one of the last frontiers in the lower 48 states, Big Bend is a land so empty the Spanish dubbed it "despoblado" or "uninhabited land." Within the park are a number of outstanding scenic and natural features, including the Chisos Mountains -- the only mountain range entirely within a national park. The Chisos Mountains are also the southernmost mountain range in the United States.
