This sweet image of a young girl holding a bouquet of flowers captures a special moment, but it also raises a number of questions. Is she a wedding flower girl? Is she bringing flowers to comfort a friend or relative? The design is inspired by an old-fashioned silhouette that likely was originally cut freehand with scissors from black paper. Such cutting, or scherenschnitte, was practiced by European artisans in the 16th century. The art form made its way to Colonial America in the 18th century and was used widely for creating silhouette portraits as well as depicting everyday events.
