Mary Sawyer was born in 1806 and grew up on a farm near Sterling, Massachusetts. When she was about 10 years old, she found a newborn lamb that was cold and nearly dead. She brought it into the house and nursed it back to health. As a result, the lamb took to Mary and began following her about. One day, it followed her to school, prompting John Roulstone, one of her schoolmates, to write a short poem that started out with the line, "Mary had a little lamb..." Called the Redstone School, the building was later purchased by Henry Ford and relocated to the property of Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury. Adapted for counted cross stitch from an original painting by Christopher Gurshin, this project depicts the structure as it appeared in the early 1800s.
